A Market Snapshot of Indonesia as Seen by Volvo Buses

Indonesia’s economic boom provides opportunities to make the most of buses to move its population across cities and islands across the nation.

Being the fourth most populated country, Indonesia is also a bus powerhouse. Indonesia’s bus imports are projected to reach $114 million by 2026. This is a sharp increase from $93 million in 2021. On average, demand has grown 9.1 percent year on year since 1994.

Besides increasing imports, exports are expected to reach $107 million by 2026, up from $83 million in 2021. On average, supply grew 9.6 percent year on year since 1995. Indonesia is placed 25th on the list of bus-exporting countries in 2021. Speaking to Asian Buses was Eka Lovyan, Chief Operation Officer, Indotruck Utama and Harry Iskandar, Country Manager, Volvo Buses Indonesia, to provide insights into this bustling and booming market. The market is generally split into two categories: the front-engine buses and those with the engine mounted in the rear, being 8 12 meters to 13.5 meters. Prior to the pandemic, between 1 500 and 1 800 units of the latter type of buses would be imported, while in the last year this number dropped to as low as 500 units.

Lovyan agreed in the statement that Indonesia is a vastly different country from other nations in Southeast Asia, being large and fragmented with thousands of islands. He also noted that there is a shift in the way people travel throughout the country, whereby previously air travel was the preferred choice. Nowadays however, more and more routes open up with more and more buses plying these routes, making transportation with buses more accessible and affordable. “Certainly, in many places we cannot compete with the use of private transportation or trains.” A surge in bus uses can be observed in bigger cities, especially in Jakarta, where Trans Jakarta is pushing for more public transport. City buses are becoming more and more popular, slowly competing with vans, transporting up to ten passengers, similar to Jeepneys in the Philippines. Intercity buses still hold an impression of being not very comfortable by most passengers, although some places have been connected since the 1960s.

The increased use of buses goes hand in hand with the improvement of infrastructure on the main islands. Many highways are being upgraded, and the shift to a new capital will be a major boost for the bus industry. Not only are the planners for the new capital city gearing the place up for more buses to move commuters, but it is also planned right away for electric buses. Currently, the mandated emission standard is EURO IV. However, Volvo is already offering all buses in EURO V standard, being already one step ahead. In Indonesia, PETRONAS is a major supplier of Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF), which is now seeing price reductions and expansions in availability.

“What we also notice is that the government is pushing for more school buses to be deployed. Currently, most parents would drop off and pick up their children using private cars and picking them up as well later on.” As one can imagine, the move to school buses would be a great relief to the over-burdened road network. In big cities, city councils are now enforcing policies that allow for use of private cars only on alternate days. Naturally, this would require alternatives offered to allow people to commute more effectively. In Jakarta, some 4 000 buses are currently in operation; it is said that that this number is to be increased to 10 000.

Being the distributor for Volvo buses, PT Indomobil Sukses Internasional Tbk (Indomobil), has started additional collaboration with Volvo Buses in 2022 to locally assemble buses. The assembly facilities are to reduce import duty and allow for the opportunity to offer cleaner technology in a more competitive way. Thus, Indomobil and Volvo Buses work closely with customers and develop vehicle solutions that can bring them closer to the business objectives of their customers. With the CKD facility, Indomobil hopes to break into the mass market as well, offering a wider range of products.  Lovyan added that this, as it also constitutes a significant investment from Volvo Buses, sends a clear message to the market about the seriousness of the two partners in Indonesia. Here, Volvo is hoping to capitalise on their reputation for quality and safety.

The decision to enhance the partnership with Indomobil was motivated by the fact that the company already has an extensive service network. Currently, Indomobil is also adding service stations along the most popular intercity routes to ensure seamless running of the vehicles. In Jakarta, Volvo buses are sold with full service and maintenance contracts, guaranteeing 24-hour emergency breakdown service. “The very extensive service network is really making this the best possible partner in the country,” added Lovyan. This network will be forming the backbone of the operation as the country is now connecting cities and highways in a bid to offer better connectivity for the transport of both, passengers and goods.

With the renewed momentum, Indomobil might be up against strong competitors, however, this may also be an advantage. Being the youngest, one may actually be able to deduct the market trends from what others are selling, piggybacking on their mistakes and thus being able to accelerate the introduction of the right products. Financing also depends on the ability to demonstrate that the credit is secure and having a strong brand, Volvo, as partner certainly helps in securing financing of the buses for operators. Now that customers are also able to compare all European bus chassis, Lovyan notices that customers are making a switch to the Volvo brand. Iskandar also has strong confidence that Volvo Buses would be the preferred business partner to the customers in Indonesia.

What Indomobil has observed is that the creation of new highways, paired with the introduction of new, comfortable buses, has elevated the standing of the profession of bus drivers with more younger people looking to being a bus driver. It is also becoming more common to see female drivers on long distance routes. Besides being an alternative to air travel, buses are now also more and more popular among tour operators ferrying tourists, companies, such as mining operations, to move their workers about. The use in such application is, according to Iskandar, a manifestation of the believes of customers in the quality and safety promise made by the Swedish brand.

Indonesia, like many other countries, is realising that the chokehold on cities can only be alleviated by reducing the number of cars on the roads. This can be achieved by offering suitable public transportation solutions. This, as often highlighted by Volvo, has to be done by means of integrated systems, comprising of buses, trains, MRT and LRT. “Many of Indonesia’s cities would benefit greatly from having BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) systems and we hope that we can play an integral role in the movement towards better transport efficiency in the country,” Lovyan said in closing.

A New MAN Truck Makes a Difference

It is with a lot of anticipation when we finally receive a new asset. Trucks are no different and putting them to the task finally gives the owner a chance to see if the vehicles live up to expectations. In January, Novan Hing, Managing Director of Soong Ki Trading Sdn Bhd, received his first MAN truck in a spectacular hand-over event (Asian Trucker reported). After six months, it is now time to hear from him how the truck performs.

“We purchased a total of five trucks from MAN and this vehicle has been commissioned now for six months. So far, everything has been very good.” Hing told Asian Trucker that prior to purchasing these trucks, the company has had a journey that took them from using re-built trucks to new ones. However, prior to this batch, it was different brands that the company has been using. Having used re-built trucks, Soong Ki Trading soon realised that the joy over the lower cost is far outweighed by the hassle of having to deal with the increased downtime. Hing mentioned that there are always minor issues that have to be dealt with, however, the new MAN trucks have performed to expectations thus far.

With a change in the focus of the business, Soong Ki Trading’s trucks also needed to change. Initially, the business operated tipper trucks, whereas now, the operation is more focused on haulage, needing different truck models. Overall, Hing observed two things happening: uptime has been significantly improved with new trucks and drivers are more motivated. The latter is important to him as the drivers remain the most important component in any transportation business.

Evaluating the various brands available in the market, Hing opted for the German marque based on two factors: reputation as being highly reliable and the access to an extensive service network. He told Asian Trucker “We need to ensure that there is sufficient support for the vehicles and MAN has proven that they can offer this service.” Overall, Hing said that the biggest advantage of using these trucks is an upgrade in the company’s image as a result of improved uptime. Downtime and breakdowns being the worst possible scenarios as they are typically very visible and clients would take note of those operators that are deemed unreliable as a consequence of such incidents.

Hing is anxious about the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) though. “We have to remember that modern trucks feature a lot more technology. These trucks have a lot more sensors and computing power, so I would think that a repair or any scheduled maintenance could be a bit more costly. Hopefully, the spare parts won’t be too expensive.” With long service intervals, Hing is looking at two or three stops for service, considering that his trucks will clock in about 100 000 kilometres a year. For him, this is good news as previously, his reconditioned trucks would have to be taken out of operation more often as they required more care and repair.

All-round Protection with MANN-FILTER for the New Ford F-Max

The premium brand MANN-FILTER now offers a comprehensive product portfolio in original equipment quality for the new F-Max truck from Ford. In addition to oil, fuel, and urea filters, the range also includes drying agent boxes. Air and cabin air filters are set to follow at a later date.

Fuel Filters Protect Against Wear and Corrosion
In the commercial vehicle segment, filters have to meet strict demands. Operational reliability is essential. The MANN-FILTER WK 11 045 z prefilter reliably separates water and coarse particles from the diesel. It works in perfect harmony with the WK 11 046 main filter to offer maximum protection for the sensitive injection system and contribute to economical engine operation.

Oil Filter Ensures Clean Oil
A functioning oil circuit is essential for combustion engines. A prerequisite for its smooth performance is engine oil that is carefully cleaned and always available. The W 11 024 oil filter for the F-Max reliably removes residues and impurities from the oil circuit and thus helps minimize engine wear.

Urea Filter Protects SCR System
Urea filters for SCR systems filter dirt particles from the urea solution AdBlue, protect system components against wear and failure, and are resistant to corrosion and ammonia. The compact MANN-FILTER U 5001 KIT with a compensating element resistant to urea solution is available for the F-Max. It reduces the free volume in the housing and absorbs compressive forces when the urea-water solution expands at sub-zero temperatures of less than – 11° C or 12° F. The flexible compensating element thus prevents damage to the system and the filter. The filter guarantees the required purity of the urea-water solution, even if refilling has to take place under harsh everyday conditions in the yard or on the road.

Range of Drying Agent Boxes
Various systems in commercial vehicles, such as the brake system and air suspension, work with compressed air. To work properly, the compressed air must be dry, clean, and oil-free. MANN-FILTER drying agent boxes dehumidify and clean this air. Dirt and soot particles are reliably removed from the system. The ability of the box to adsorb water prevents the compressed air system from freezing and the system components remain free from corrosion. In the integrated coalescing filter, the fine oil droplets combine to form a homogeneous liquid phase. This reliably removes oil from the compressed air system.

For the F-Max, workshops and dealers can choose between three different MANN-FILTER drying agent boxes in original equipment quality, depending on the requirements. The TB 1374/13 x drying agent box offers the basic functions of drying and particle filtration, the TB 1394/16 x provides enhanced protection thanks to the integrated coalescing filter, and the premium solution TB 1396 x Gold delivers maximum drying performance even under the toughest operating conditions.

Hydraulic Filter for Clean oil in the Power Steering
The H 601/4 hydraulic filter completes the MANN-FILTER product range for the Ford F-Max. It filters dirt particles from the hydraulic oil in the power steering and protects the sensitive components from wear.

For all filters, always comply with the service interval according to the manufacturer's specifications to maintain complete filter performance.

Asian Trucker Roadshow: Spot the Fake - Protect Your Assets (Video Inside)

Industry leading brands joined forces to educate about the potential harm that fake and counterfeit pose to the transport industry.

It was an early start to a full day filled with presentations and interactive sessions when the “Spot the Fake – Protect your Assets” was held on the 18th of May 2023 in the Courtyard by Marriott in Setia Alam. Almost 100 participants flocked to the session, eager to know more about the topic.

Part of each presentation by the supporting brands was an elaboration on how to identify genuine and fake or counterfeit parts. In particular, packaging is a significant component of any product and users may be able to spot a dodgy part just by looking at the packaging. For instance, a fake or counterfeit product may only be supplied in a brown carton, whereby the original would be in a colourful box with high-quality livery printed on it. Today, QR codes are another important tool that can help users to identify original parts and components.

Automechanika Shanghai 2023 Breaking All-time Record in Visitor Numbers

The 2023 edition of Automechanika Shanghai proved exceedingly dynamic with all domains of the automotive supply chain coming together for marketing, trade, knowledge sharing and education. Participants praised the resources that were used to connect foreign and domestic buyers and suppliers, with the ultimate goal of building networks in the international business environment. In this regard, the organised networking opportunities and exhibition tours, amidst other services, were crowd favourites; local participants were afforded valuable opportunities to gain insightful perspectives on foreign markets, while international attendees could build a comprehensive understanding of the domestic automotive industry.

In the same way, activities on the show floor as well as fringe events fostered a sense of collaboration in addition to a shared vision for a sustainable and connected future. For example, the Innovation4Mobility Showcase delved into key pockets of the supply chain; Four Showcase Areas included the Innovation4Mobility Mainstage, Future Mobility Area, Green Repair Area and Customising x Tech Area. The concept revolved around the interplay between digitalisation, connectivity, sustainability, new energy, and aftermarket services, stemming from the growing demand for new mobility solutions and environmental protection in the automotive industry.

Amplifying these trends even further, the concurrent fringe programme saw a total of 77 fringe events take place over the course of four days. A crowd favourite was the debuting International Automotive Industry Conference 2023 Presented by Automechanika Shanghai. The conference series (including one main conference and five related events) covered all the major global automotive forecasts, policy updates and opportunities moving into 2024 and beyond.

In terms of participation, the turnout of visitors at the fairground broke an all-time record set at the previous 15th edition, growing by 16 percent to reach a total of 185,284. Internationalism grew by 19 percent with players representing 177 countries and regions like Australia, Brazil, Germany, India, Malaysia, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Türkiye, and the UAE (amongst the highest representation).

Furthermore, the show hosted 5,652 exhibitors from 41 countries and regions, including 16 pavilions from France, Germany, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Poland, Singapore, Spain, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, the UAE, the UK, and the US.

As a result, the global participation garnered strong recognition; feedback uncovered that these attendees relished in the interactions between domestic and overseas markets as many global buyers and suppliers were able to reconnect in-person for the first time in Shanghai since 2019. As a result, the convergence greatly contributed to a successful end-of-year gathering, offering an even bigger focus on electrification, connectivity and sustainability.

The show received vast attention from both the trade and mass media, with viewership surpassing the 40 million mark in domestic and overseas channels.

Autonomous trucks: MAN wins "Truck Innovation Award 2024"

MAN Truck & Bus has received the "Truck Innovation Award 2024" from the International Truck of the Year jury. The commercial vehicle manufacturer was honoured for its research and development projects in the field of autonomous driving - ANITA and ATLAS-L4. In his laudatory speech, jury chairman Gianenrico Griffini, representing 25 international truck trade journalists, emphasised "the advanced characteristics of both projects, the contribution to hub-to-hub and intermodal transport automation, and the fruitful project cooperation between MAN Truck & Bus, logistics providers, component suppliers, research institutions, and public infrastructure operators" as essential for the Truck Innovation Award 2024 to be presented to the MAN projects ANITA and ATLAS-L4 for autonomous driving.

“The award is not only a great honour for ANITA and ATLAS-L4 and the partners involved. It is also an acknowledgement of the achievements of all our colleagues at MAN, who have been driving automated driving forward with great expertise and passion for many years. Alongside digitalisation and CO2-free drives, this is the third key pillar in the transformation to the climatefriendly, safe, efficient and intelligently networked transport of the future. From 2030, we want to offer autonomous trucks in series production for transport on defined routes between logistics hubs," says Dr Frederik Zohm, Executive Board Member for Research and Development at MAN Truck & Bus.

Autonomous trucks are particularly useful for transport on motorways between logistics centres (hub-to-hub): they increase safety by helping to avoid rear-end collisions caused by fatigue, are always particularly energy-efficient and stabilise the logistics flow thanks to their independence from individual driving time breaks. They can also help to alleviate the driver shortage by freeing up drivers for more varied and attractive transport tasks in regional and distribution transport.

ATLAS-L4: autonomous driving on the motorway

"In the ATLAS-L4 project, we are developing autonomous driving on the motorway specifically for the hub-to-hub use case. We are using the framework of the law on autonomous driving passed in Germany in 2021, which already allows the use of driverless lorries on defined routes with technical supervision. We want to test a corresponding prototype vehicle on the road by the end of 2024," says Sebastian Völl, Project Manager Autonomous Driving at MAN Truck & Bus. Since January 2022, MAN Truck & Bus, Knorr-Bremse, Leoni, Bosch, Fernride, BTC Embedded Systems, Fraunhofer AISEC, Technische Universität München, Technische Universität Braunschweig, TÜV SÜD, Autobahn GmbH and the Würzburg Institute of Transport Sciences (WIVW GmbH) have been working together on the research and development project "Autonomous Transport on Motorways and Expressways at Level 4" (ATLAS-L4), which is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection.

ANITA: Autonomous Driving in a Container HubTogether with Deutsche Bahn, Fresenius University of Applied Sciences and Götting KG, MAN investigated the integration of autonomous trucks within logistics hubs as part of the "Autonomous Innovation in Terminal Operations" (ANITA) research and development project, which is also funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection. To this end, MAN developed a self-driving lorry that autonomously handles container loading from road to rail with the help of digital mission planning. After six months of practical tests conducted jointly with the partners at the DB Intermodal Services container depot and the DUSS container terminal in Ulm, it was clear at the end of the project in September 2023 that the autonomous truck was up to 40 per cent more productive than conventional vehicles and thus showed great potential to make environmentally friendly combined road and rail freight transport more efficient, predictable and flexible. "The special thing about ANITA was the complete digital integration of the autonomous lorry into the terminal process. This is a general prerequisite for the use of autonomous trucks in logistics," says Amelie Jacquemart-Purson, ANITA project manager at MAN Truck & Bus.

Second Truck Innovation Award for MAN Truck & Bus
This is the second time that the prestigious Truck Innovation Award 2024 has gone to an MAN automation project. In 2019, the automated construction site safety vehicle AFAS won the coveted industry prize at its very first edition.

Barisan Isuzu D-Max Dipertingkatkan Untuk 2023

Built on a Foundation of Trust

Emerging from the pandemic with record sales, Hino has found an approach that ensured sustainability during a global crisis. Managing Director of Hino Motors Sales (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (HMSM),Atsushi Uchiyama, discussed with Asian Trucker how the brand managed to not only stay relevant, but to enhance their brand value in such tough times.

AT: Last year you have posted a sales record and a record in service intake. Why do you think people spent more on their trucks last year?
AU: What I notice is that passenger cars have also seen record sales last year, which can be traced back to the SST exemption. When we are looking at commercial vehicles, the situation is different. A lot of vehicles sold last year where from the backlog of the previous years. During the lockdowns in the years 2020 and 2021, there was strong demand for trucks, as a result of the increased need for transportation for courier services and to support online shopping. Even in lockdown, people still need food. However, due to the MCO (Movement Control Order), we could not operate as usual and even had to stop production for several months. In summary, we had high demand, but could not satisfy it.

Generally, Malaysia is a very strong domestic market and the demand for trucks has always been high. To support the truck owners, we have also initiated a number of activities. HINO believes that one can not just sell the vehicles without having supportive activities to accompany the sales. A new warranty program covering our trucks for five years was launched in 2020. In addition, we launched a membership program which gave our customers access to an extended warranty of up to seven years and special promotions and parts, for instance free brake linings.

All our vehicles are now also equipped with telematics. Customers might be busy and not notice that the vehicles are due for service. Based on this insight, we have implemented the position of CSO, Customer Satisfaction Officer, in all our dealerships. This dedicated person will utilise the telematics data and call the customer whenever a service is due. Thanks to these initiatives, together with the increased sales of our trucks, lead to the increase in service intakes.

AT: What were the key factors for staying successful whereby no staff left or was made redundant during the pandemic? What made them stay and how come you did not downsize as that is an easy option to counter a crisis?
AU: We need to look again at the market conditions during the pandemic. Hino is a leader in light and medium duty commercial vehicles, and these were in high demand during the crisis, as we mentioned before. This meant that we managed to continue selling trucks, thus keeping the cash flow going and people busy. Plus, we have between 60 000 to 100 000 units on the road, which still needed to be serviced. Customers would come back to us for their regular inspections, thus again requiring us to keep the headcount and adding to the cash flow. Hino group has a policy that we do not retrench people, as they are our most important assets. Whenever one has to train new staff, it is a lengthy and costly process. Hence it is better to retain staff for when business booms again as one then has the right resources.

AT: Hino is upgrading dealers across Malaysia to 3S outlets. What is the rationale behind this move?
AU: There are only three or four 1S dealers left in our network. There is a good reason to upgrade to being a 3S outlet: margins on vehicle sales alone will not be enough to sustain a business and it is the follow up jobs will make money for the 3S outlets. Upgrading from 1S to 3S is allowing dealers to forge long term relationships with clients and this way have a more sustainable business. While we encourage our dealers to upgrade to become 3S outlets, we will not force them. From our data, we can tell that it is a beneficial move, however some are happy just selling the vehicles. And it is those dealers that we also have to thank for as they have put all these vehicles on the road that I mentioned before, those that we now serviced during the pandemic.

AT: Your tenure here is an interesting timing: you have seen Malaysia pre-pandemic and all through it, then the recovery. How has the market changed in your view?
AU: What we see is that customers are much more conscious about cost. This is in two parts: firstly the vehicle itself. Many transport companies are under pressure to drive down cost. A lower price for the truck is one way to achieve that. Beyond that, they are looking for ways to reduce cost in the operation of the trucks. Here we see that our customers are becoming more sophisticated in pinpointing where there are opportunities to find extra money. This is not just a Malaysian issue, but a global one.

For instance, customers are looking for ways to reduce the money spend on maintenance. An easy way is to buy non-genuine products. However, we know that this is a fallacy as such parts are typically not as good as the original parts we sell. Our customer will find that the uptime is much better with genuine parts than with counterfeit parts for instance and that they make more money using our services.

For this year, we are going to focus on another activity that is aimed at delivering the best value for our customers. Traditionally, one would look at sales figures and service intake. However, we want to get away from that, comparing the perception of our service network with that of our competition. Sure, we need to plan and thus sales numbers are important, but such number does not reflect the satisfaction of a buyer. Called “Best in town” we will evaluate dealers based on the criteria such as employee satisfaction and benchmark against the network of our competitors in the same area.

AT: What is your view on the implementation of e-mobility in Malaysia?
AU: The Malaysian government has made it clear that the approach is to first introduce and promote the introduction of electric buses first. It is generally acknowledged that the charging infrastructure would have to be implemented first. What we can expect is that Klang Valley will be the first area to be equipped with charging stations and then it will expand into other business centres.

We realise that we need to do more than just sell vehicles. For instance, we might be dealing with the buyer, the owner of the truck, but we may not have had any contact with the user, the driver. Hino Malaysia wants to change that by having on-boarding processes in place for drivers, and also organising more professional handovers. This will go hand in hand with a standardisation of our service delivery across all network partners. We acknowledge that this is a huge undertaking, but it will be beneficial for our customers.

In Japan Hino has introduced an e-truck for last mile deliveries last year. It is our home market and we will need to learn about electric trucks and how they can best be used first at our doorstep before we start offering them in other markets. Hino needs to gain experience first before we can confidently offer such vehicles here for instance. Currently, we have clients that want to experience this kind of new vehicles, but we have to ask for patience.

In the meantime, Daimler Truck, Mitsubishi Fuso, Hino and Toyota Motor Corporation concluded an MoU on accelerating development of Advanced Technologies and integration of Mitsubishi Fuso and Hino Motors.

AT: You added the 200 Series to the line-up. How has the response been?
UA: By now, we have received orders for about 100 units of this vehicle. It is an interesting option as it suits the new needs of transporters for smaller vehicles, perfectly fit to handle the last mile transport and missions that derive from online shopping, due to a shift in consumer behaviour. Unfortunately, we are running at full capacity in our assembly plant and those that have ordered the Hino 200 series trucks will have to wait a bit.
